Decisions are often made by debating topics and putting forward opinions, solutions and alternatives. Why not put your debating skills to the test by debating on topics that are important to you in Wales?
Young people could stand as a candidate in the upcoming Welsh Youth Parliament elections if they would like to represent the views of young people on a national level.
Useful debating statements: It’s always a good idea to start with one or two light-hearted debating statements that act as ice-breakers before debating more serious topics.
- Chocolate is nicer than sweets
- Summer is better than Winter
- Young people should be taught more about politics in school
- Businesses should be limited to the amount of packaging they use on single-use items
- You should have to pay for prescriptions in Wales
- Heavier fines should be in place for people who litter
Top tips to host a debate:
- Set out rules to ensure that your debate will run smoothly (including a time limit to discuss each topic). This includes listening to others, respecting other people’s viewpoints and to challenge the statement not the person when putting your viewpoint forward
- Allocate a chair. The Senedd’s chair is also known as the Llywydd. The Llywydd also chairs meetings of the Welsh Youth Parliament. Their role is to call on speakers and help manage the debate.
- Debate anywhere from 5-10 topics and have fun! You never know, you may come up with a new idea for your school or youth group.
- Take your ideas forward and submit your issues to the Welsh Youth Parliament.
